Men's Haircuts for Long Hair: What Works Past the Shoulders

Which cuts hold their shape past the shoulders?
Once your hair reaches the shoulders, four cuts carry it well: long layers, one length with soft ends, an undercut hidden beneath the length, and a cut planned around a man bun. The grooming site 10Trim says hair starts to read as long past the jaw and becomes properly long around the neck and shoulders; at roughly 1.25 cm a month, getting there from a short cut takes one to two years. Long layers suit straight and wavy hair: the barber cuts graduated lengths through the middle and the ends, so the hair moves instead of hanging as a solid block. Fine hair wants the opposite, the same guide says, with blunter ends and fewer layers, because heavy layering makes thin hair look stringy. One length keeps the outline level all round, and Manhattan Barbershop, a New York shop, suggests point cutting the ends so they fall without a heavy edge; it asks for the least styling of the four. An undercut under long hair clips the sides or the nape short and leaves the length on top to cover them: worn down, nobody sees it, and tied up, it shows a clean outline. The man bun needs enough length at the crown to gather, and 10Trim notes that a ponytail asks for less crown length than a bun, while a taper or undercut beneath keeps either from looking bulky. Curly hair spreads as it grows, so the cut should remove weight without breaking the curl.
Ask for a dusting and say in centimetres what comes off
Keeping length starts before the scissors come out. CADMEN, a Canadian barber academy, separates a trim, which takes off about a centimetre or less to clean the ends, from a cut, which reshapes, and says vague words cause most of the lost length: say 'trim only' and give a number, or hold your fingers apart to show it. Ask the barber to take the least first and check with you before going further. On the ends the barber usually reaches for scissors. Manhattan Barbershop describes dusting, where the barber removes only the frayed and split pieces rather than cutting one straight line across, and says it is often done on dry hair, because wet hair stretches and hides how long it really is. Point cutting and slide cutting take bulk out of thick hair through the length, with thinning shears used sparingly. Clippers still tidy the neckline and around the ears, and that clean edge makes long hair look chosen. For timing, GQ points out that nobody can tell a 23 cm cut from a 24 cm one, so long hair has a buffer, but warns that past roughly eight weeks breakage and split ends set in. A regular cut makes hair grow healthier because it removes the hair that would split, the Mayo Clinic dermatologist Rochelle Torgerson told the American Academy of Dermatology; it will not make it grow faster, since growth happens below the skin. Manhattan Barbershop suggests a dusting every few weeks and a fuller trim every few months.
Tie it loosely and keep the beard shorter than the hair
Long hair breaks at the ends first. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises massaging shampoo into the scalp only and letting the rinse run through the length, using conditioner after every shampoo, on the ends if your hair is fine or straight, and wrapping the hair in a towel instead of rubbing it. Wet hair breaks more easily, so let straight hair dry a little before you comb it gently with a wide-tooth comb. Shampoo as often as your scalp gets oily. Tying it up carries its own risk. The AAD lists tightly pulled buns and ponytails among the styles that cause traction alopecia, hair loss from constant pulling, and DermNet describes it in men who twist long uncut hair tightly on the scalp. If a style hurts, it is too tight. Pull the hair back loosely, use covered bands made for hair, change the style often, and check the forehead every month for broken hairs or a receding line, because with constant pulling the loss can turn permanent. With a beard, GQ advises keeping it close to the chin once the hair is very long, since long hair and a long beard together tend to look wild; a full, trimmed beard with neat sides balances it better. At 044 Barbershop in Kyiv you can book a haircut and beard trim as one visit and have the beard length set against the hair. Come in when the ends start to fray, and in the chair the barber can dust them dry, section by section, and match the beard to the length you keep.
